ANDERSON – It wasn’€™t the prettiest of contests Wednesday night as Anderson hosted Liberty Christian in the second semifinal of the Madison County Basketball Tournament.

Both teams played tough defense and in the end the Lady Tribe held on for a 38-31 win over the Lady Lions to advance to the championship game Friday against Pendleton Heights.

“We let things get away from us a little bit,” said Anderson coach Shannon Cleckley. “€œBut the message was we had to fight and win to advance to get an opportunity to defend our title. May not have been the best looks but we were able to get through it.”

The game had a very choppy start as teams combined to shoot 3-19 from the floor and had 16 turnovers in the first quarter. Liberty trailed 6-1 with its only point coming on a free throw by Monica Watkins.

The Lady Tribe played tough defense in the second and eventually found a little bit of offensive flow to build a 21-3 advantage. But it was the final three minutes of the first half that Liberty found its footing. Melody Davidson scored the final four points of the half to send the Lady Lions to the locker room down 21-7.

Liberty outscored Anderson 14-3 in the third quarter, getting the lead down to 23-21 before a free throw by Tiana Ford put the Lady Tribe up by three. Liberty held Anderson to 1-12 shooting from the floor in the quarter while Watkins and Davidson cranked up the offense.

Anderson opened the fourth with four quick points to go up by seven but a basket by Karli Petty and a technical foul on Cleckley allowed Liberty to get right back in it. Petty hit one of the two technical free throws and Sarah Aikin sank a 3-pointer to make it a one-point contest with 5:40 left.

Liberty had chances to take the lead but misses and turnovers kept the Lions from it. The Lady Tribe took control in the final two minutes with defense and free throw shooting.

Katie Martin put Anderson up five late with two free throws and a three-point play by Kenigia Hamilton off of a steal gave Anderson a 37-29 lead with a minute left. Anderson (10-7) hit 6-10 free throws in the fourth while Liberty was just 1-2.

Davidson led Liberty (10-5) with 12 points and 10 rebounds, Watkins finished with eight points and Aikin had seven.

Kenigia Hamilton led Anderson with 10 points and 12 rebounds while Stasha Hamilton had eight points.
