PENDLETON – It was a competitive day of wrestling at Pendleton Heights Saturday as seven county teams battled slick roads to compete in the Madison County Wrestling Tournament.
In the end, four schools had champions and all seven had either a first or second place in the competition. Pendleton Heights put 10 wrestlers in the finals with three coming out on top to lead the Arabians to the team championship, with Anderson and Frankton tied for second.
The day started an hour late due to weather and before the meet began, competitors gathered with the coaches and officials to send a salute to a fellow wrestler. Anderson graduate Mike Fetters, who had his lower leg amputated as a young child, went on to be a semi-state qualifier for the Indians. It was announced that Mike is battling Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.
Wrestlers, coaches and officials all held their right foot up behind their leg as a salute to Fetters.
The Indians did not have a titlist but had three second place finishes including Willie Dennison at 106, KJ Williams at 113 and Pickering at 120. Williams was trailing in points to Sparky Manis of Lapel but nearly won by fall late. Manis was able to fight off the challenge to hold on to the title.
The competition was spread out with schools having strengths in certain weight classes and the matches were for the most part close and competitive.
“I’m proud of all the guys have done,” said Pendleton Coach Dave Cloud of the other coaches. “Some of them have some struggles with facilities and money but I’m proud of the effort everybody in the county is making. Courtney is building an outstanding program at Frankton. I can’t say enough about the job Cary (House) is doing at Anderson. He’s doing this because he cares about the kids. (Jeff) Commeville is doing a great job at Lapel. Madison-Grant is doing a nice job and Alexandria’s numbers are up. There’s a lot of good positive things going on in Madison County wrestling.”
