A physical Anderson girls basketball team stood toe-to-toe with fifth-ranked Carmel in their Sectional 8 semifinal Friday night at Hamilton Southeastern.

Unfortunately for the Indians, that occurred for only the first six minutes of the game.

The Greyhounds simply had too much depth, and Anderson did not, and Carmel proceeded to smash the Indians 95-46.

Anderson finished 11-13 and dropped its initial sectional contest for the third year running. Carmel (21-3) came off a 14-13 deficit and poured in 21 unanswered points, and that was the ballgame.

“That’s hard to beat a team that’s good to begin with and they can hit 60 percent of their shots,” Anderson coach Shannon Cleckley said.

All 12 Greyhounds who suited up scored, and they combined to go 34-of-56. The Carmel bench contributed 58 points. Starter Tomi Taiwo led with 17, and reserves Molly Gillig (11) and Reagan Hune (10) followed.

Things looked promising for the Indians at the outset, as they matched Carmel’s brawn.

Anderson had a 7-3 advantage three minutes in, after Deondra Sutton hit a 3-pointer. Then Antaria Hammond knocked down a couple from long range, and the Indians were back in front, 13-11, at the 2:13 mark of the opening period.

Taiwo quickly countered with a triple, giving Carmel the lead back. The Greyhounds never looked back.

Carmel finished the quarter 20-13 to the good, and added 12 more to the cushion over the first 2 1/2 minutes of the second period, while keeping Anderson off the board. Two free throws by Kenigia Hamilton ended the Indians’ drought, with 5:10 left in the half.

The Greyhounds proceeded to put up 37 points in Quarter 2 and were up 57-23 at the break. It was 76-40 at the third stop.

While a win would have been too much to ask to begin with (the Greyhounds defeated Anderson 75-51 on Jan. 11 at the Tipi), the Indians only had eight play significant time. Two players did not make the trip because of off-the-court issues.
